The Sunset Beach Womans Club was founded in 1929. Today, our focus is the same as it was then. Finding ways to bring friendship and sisterhood to our community. Supporting those who want to further their educations, sharing information with interesting speakers, laughing together as we work. Always working to improve our community. Usually enjoying a great meal and a nice beverage at our meetings.
We care about our community, work hard when we have to, play hard most of the time, care about each other, enjoy social gatherings and do not shy away from volunteering. Throughout the pandemic we were unable to have the Chili Cookoff, our major fundraiser. So, like our predecessors, we created new ways to earn a buck including Pirate Parties, St. Pats Parties and Spirit Baskets. We did everything we could to raise funds because we felt strongly that our support for the community and the scholarships we award are needed more than ever in troubled times.
Our main philanthropy is giving scholarships each year to deserving local students and adults who are continuing their education. If you are a resident of Sunset Beach, Surfside or Huntington Beach, and are planning to pursue a secondary education ~ please consider applying for a Sunset Beach Woman's Club scholarship between January and March.
Generosity. Fun. Friendship. Civic pride.
Who wouldn’t be proud to be a member of an organization which epitomizes those qualities. We support local businesses, and we walk the walk of those who are committed to ensuring quality of life in our community. The SBWC is a 501(C)4 not for profit organization, organized for civic and social purposes.

History:
In 1929, the unincorporated community of Sunset Beach was a virtual ‘island’ surrounded by wetlands and open spaces. The Cities of Seal Beach and Huntington Beach were some distance away, PCH was under construction and mostly dirt at the time and the ‘Red Line’ railway was the primary way to get into and out of Sunset Beach.
A group of 12 women formed the Sunset Beach Womans Club to provide a social and civic outlet for the community. By 1931, the Sunset Beach Womans Club had grown to be a group of 27 women. They worked hard to raise $250.00 and purchased a lot in Sunset Beach, the current Bayview location of the Sunset Beach Womans Club. Having decided to buy a surplus Navy building for $1000.00, the Sunset Beach Woman's Club incorporated on March 26, 1931 "to make it legal". They organized as a 501c4 not for profit and began the search for a new building. After continued fundraising, the group decided they were ready to build. They found a surplus building owned by the military. Together, they BORROWED $1,000 from a member at 7.5% interest and purchased the building, had it cut in half, delivered to the lot, and put back together.
Then the real work began. Together with their husbands, these original “Rosie the Riveter” women dug ditches, installed water and sewer lines, installed electricity, stuccoed the building, tiled the floors and created a state of the art kitchen. Although the tiles have been updated and we have new appliances, the basic architecture of our building has not changed since 1931. And the basic architecture of our club has not changed either. We remain committed to serving our community.
